Rem Sleep Disorder
REM sleep is a sleeping disorder which usually affects the rapid eye movement of the sufferer. Normal sleep is known to have two states which are distinct. One of them is known as the non rapid eye movement state and the other one is known as the rapid eye movement state. The non rapid eye movement sleep is further divided into four different stages. Usually, the breathing becomes extremely irregular during rapid eye movement sleep. The sufferer also experiences a rise in the blood pressure during this kind of sleep. A lot of muscle tone is also lost by the individual who is suffering from this kind of disorder. However, one of the most interesting aspects related to this disorder is that the brain is extremely active of the sufferer and in fact the research has proved that the activity of the brain of the sufferer during disorder of REM-sleep is as good the activity recorded after waking up of that individual.
The disorder of REM-sleep also has the ability to affect the behavior of an individual and the term is known as the disorder of REM-sleep behavior. You would notice that this disorder usually affects the people who are middle aged. However, people who are in their 60s and 70s also tend to be prone towards this disorder. This disorder can affect the behavior of the sufferer in a major way and the sufferer might suddenly start kicking, jumping, yelling, talking or even punching in the night on the bed. Most of the times this happens because of the fact that the sufferer is experiencing a bad dream and hence reacts to the dream. This disorder is probably the worst of the entire REM sleep cycle.
The causes of the REM sleeping disorder are not known. However, certain predictions have been made and many efforts have been taken in order to know the exact cause. Most of the experts believe that this disorder is caused in association with the different neurological conditions which are degenerative in nature.
The REM sleep disorder symptoms can be identified easily in an individual. One of the most common symptoms of this disorder is that the person starts to enact the dreams that he/she experiences. The behavior can be violent at most of the times.
The REM sleep behavior disorder symptoms are probably the most dangerous symptoms of any sleeping disorder as the patient tends to cause injury to his/her bed partner or even to his/her own self. There is a chance for a fatal injury if proper care is not taken.
The disorder of REM-sleep can awaken the person who is suffering completely or at times the person might not be fully awake. It is highly important that disorder of REM sleep patients be treated in a proper manner and they should be observed while they are asleep.
